John kept driving round the block just to see the house
Something deep down couldnt let it go
He found it difficult to believe it had sold already but there were new people in there
He had seen the new curtains up at the window
Up in Amy's room
And the hippy type girl who had wheeled a bike out of the garage and cycled off towards Main
He drove round again
The Realtors sign was still up
He convinced himself that maybe whoever it was was just looking
Yeah that's what it was
He clinched the wheel as he turned the corner
The notes in his pocket stuck into his leg
His jeans were too tight on account of the bulging thing in his other pocket
John's pop had given him a two hundred bucks
'It'll get you enough gas to get over to your mom's in Illinois ' he'd said hugging John
It was a two day drive east
John circled the block and cruised by the house again
The front door was open
He drove by and remembered when he and Janey had moved in
He'd carried her through that same door,  over the threshold
She'd danced round in the empty space that was finally theirs

Spinning and shrieking like a whiling dervish

They'd made love on the cold floor

Surrounded by everything in boxes

But they'd fought so badly when the bank had  foreclosed
It had all come out
The fears
The recriminations
Janey was inconsolable
'No!, No! No !' John she'd screamed ' This cant be happening , you said..'
Now it didnt matter
She and Amy and Tom had gone.
John's pop had sat with him saying nothing for a long time that week
'There'll be better times son ' he'd finally said squeezing John's knee
John turned on to Huntingdon again and slowed for the drive by
He saw two young men in leather jackets drinking beer in the doorway
One bounced  a basketball on the step
John's involuntarily tensed, it was Tom's ball
They must have forgotten to take it
He decided to drive round again
Maybe he could get the ball for Tom and patch things up with Janey after Illinois
After things calmed down
And everything stopped falling
He stared at the men but drove on .

Ricky punched Alan in the shoulder
I told you dude, he's the man
Here comes our key money
It was the third property they'd squatted that month
It had taken two weeks to get the  key money on the last gig
You want us to move out , we'll go man Ricky had said
Pocketing the 1500 bucks
Helen still felt uncomfortable with it but Alan was getting used to the easy money
Thats him dude , Ricky smiled throwing the ball through the hoop
He's been driving round sizing us up
Now you just chill and let me do the talking
He picked up the ball and span it on his finger
We're partying tonight bro and maybe we can lose Helen

John felt the need to count to ten before he stopped
He overshot the house some
Something didnt feel quite right but he wanted the ball
It was the last connection
He crossed the drive and gently but firmly took it out of Ricky's hands
'whoa ' Ricky said backing up ' you better have the money man as we aint moving without a court order'
John looked puzzled , he dropped the ball and it  rolled into the road
' Just give us the fucking money and we'll leave ' Alan said
' We rented the place off the owner ' Ricky said' he sure screwed us but if you want these'
He dangled the keys in front of John
You're going to have to pay key money and we;re out of here
John took the keys from Ricky
It seemed the most natural thing to do
But he'd never figured on the gun
He'd thought to end it all but hadnt had the courage to
The two young men were shouting and they were just making so much noise
John wanted to be back at his pop's
Or in Bloomington Illinois
The ball rolled across the street.

Helen saw the telltale lights from two blocks away
There was an ambulance and three black and whites all flashing
She just knew something would go wrong
It wasnt right
Moving in on people like that for money
She cycled by glancing sideways very quickly so as not to draw attention to herself
Helen saw that there were three figures lying on the ground
The police were cuffing two of them
Her heart was pounding
She could only think of Ricky
Helen knew she should have just kept on going
But something deep down couldnt let it go
So she went round the block to ride by the house again
