voodoo tricks by autotelic

riding the boiling white crest of the third wave
powered by ever renewable energy  and abolished diminishing returns

heroicly poised to surf the future
a vast ocean of data and opportunity
massively confident of being able to engineer the greatest breaks
the coolest top turns and ariels
massively confident of being able to harness  the power of the wave
to stay upright ,intimately  connected  with the medium and way, way ahead

of the billions of other surfers and sun bathers on the planet

and its going to be ok I guess
as long as you keep your balance

and dont stray too far out from shore

because money problems aside

they're going to bioengineer away all the environmental  risks

sulfurise the atmosphere to avoid a too heavy sun tan
ironise the seas to make them more absorbent

so we dont have to be more reflective ourselves
and construct an earth orbit sunshade from millions of tiny mechanical mirrors

to keep surf conditions just right
so, chill
grab your board and get paddling
last one in the water
is dead meat

and it took the shaking woman in her forties
struggling to fill out job application forms  in the cafe this morning
and clearly beached by the prerequisites
the relentless soul destroying ' you will have's..'
that she obviously didnt

and never will
to make me realise that there was a gap in the 'suicide note' market

how did we manage not to see it ?...

- the process could be automated

and packaged as a simple ,user friendly online form
a comment box for reasons for taking one's life

- subject to , say,  a 120 word limit

fields  for persons to be informed - parents , friends, employer, etc.
geo-locational info for the authorities

( lets be realistic, some users will misuse the product to cry for help )
and of course

an ' Are you sure you want to proceed with this transaction 'button

and secure identification and payment verification processes

that need to be completed before the user can  'send'
it'll be a platform agnostic AJAX solution

with a fully comprehensive FAQ section

that'll  take most major credit cards and paypal

( sorry, no debit card planned for beta release )

and it'll post humously update

a users Facebook or other social network profile

at the preset time as well

now i just have to hope no one steals my idea

or it doesnt exist already

as i'm sure it'll be the next big killer app

in fact, if you could help translate for the Japanese language version

get in touch..

Was that a Party Political Broadcast on behalf of the Luddites or the Flat
Earth Society? Either way it sucks. We are here to stay.
Sarah   |2008-07-06 03:16:22
we are here to stay? what kind of ego bullshit is that? the planet is on its
way out because of our presence, you fucking idiot.

you sound really fucked
up.
do you drive a really big truck and carry a really big gun?
vinny  - the exit   |2008-07-06 04:05:55
Hey Sarah, I know it's shocking to realize that many people actually believe
that the human race is here to stay, but just look at it this way, they're the
ones that are in for all the nasty surprises.
Devon   |2008-07-06 04:33:58
the thing is: most people do feel that their lives have purpose, so they're not
going to identify with this writing, I also think that most people have
developed extra layers of dumbed down, numbed down, apathetic skin, and they
just don't care about how sad and sorry the human condition really is.
Frank   |2008-07-06 08:03:54
I'm sure that's right Devon, most people are reproducing life , breeding , so
the last thing they need to be doing from that perspective is consciously and
objectively questioning whether our way of life and tenure on the planet are
sustainable. That would raise questions about why they were breeding more mouths
to feed on an already massively overpopulated where millions live in hunger and
the demand for food , water and other resources is starting to outstrip supply .

Better to shut down and take the microview ..
Anna  - There are too many people on the planet   |2008-07-06 08:22:56
I recently read a post in Wired's comments section on Peak Water where they
guy cut to the quick and wrote ( I paraphrase ) 'look we need to reduce demand -
reduce the population - or just face up to the fact before the planet and human
nature does the drastic pruning back for us through catastrophe and wars.
Anonymous   |2008-07-06 15:46:56
is that "send" button any different than if someone or a group of people
decide to set off a nuclear bomb in order to make the planet more
sustainable?
what's more ethical?
Anna   |2008-07-06 16:19:56
Bertrand Russel made the same point about plagues in relation to overpopulation
at a time when the world had billions of people less than it has now . He said
regular plagues would be unpleasant but ' What of it ?'
D   |2008-07-06 16:30:16
Russell had 4 children. This doesnt cancel out his argument but it does show why
hypocrisy, a constant of human nature particular at the bourgoise level,
tolerates the starving margin and environmental disaster when other people are
the victims.
jillian  - future shock   |2008-07-06 16:36:24
I don't have a problem with this writing, or anything else on this website,
these casual conversations don't make me uncomfortable.....'Future Shock' was
written 38 years ago, and I'm just a little surprised that so many people still
aren't prepared to acknowledge these "accelerated changes" that are
undeniably happening. (can anyone else hear Nero playing the fiddle?
)

This piece could easily be the last page of 'Future Shock', under the
heading 38 Years Later.
Anna   |2008-07-06 17:26:29
There's a dismissive sweeping review of Toffler's work on Amazon where the
reviewer basically states that there have been no really significant alarming
changes for the generations that grew up with computer technology but I think he
completely misses the point about the way that societies have changed , not
simply the changes predicted and dealt with by Toffler, and the sheer level of
damage we have inflicted on the planet.
jillian   |2008-07-07 03:39:03
following up on what Devon said about purpose....people that are still raising
children under the age of 18 couldn't possibly subscribe to the philosophy on
this site, even if they are bombarded with an arsenal of evidence that food and
water is running out. They really believe that energy can't be destroyed, since
it's all recycled, in other words, people that are still raising children are
really working the glass is half full.
D   |2008-07-07 04:51:47
Jillian,

For all the dire environmental predictions and warnings , I suspect
the majority of people still believe that science and technology will ride in
and save the day - necessity being the mother of invention, etc - and probably
view the job of safeguarding the future of humankind on this planet as having
nothing much to do with them as individuals , the same kind of myopic view
parents have to over population, the problem is always going to be caused by and
impact on someone else.

This raises the question, whose job is it to worry
about the future anyway?
Bjorn   |2008-07-07 05:11:24
Are we even hardwired to do anything other than fret about our own personal
circumstances and future? We dont exactly seem overly concerned by the state of
the hive.
sarah   |2008-07-07 05:13:20
I see what you're saying Jillian, it sort of sounds like a disclaimer, and once
in a while the occasional disclaimer is a good head check, it looks responsible,
no one here wants to be a bad influence, but a lot of young ones that are still
being raised by their parents often come to their own conclusions about things
anyway. And this is something that causes a lot of parents a tremendous amount
of disappointment, kids often don't turn out the way you want them to (with the
exception of the pleasantville kid). It happens all the time:
example----Hippie chick home schools her kids, only eats organic, keeps her kids
away from pop culture (cause she says it's so toxic) and then as the years go by
she discovers that her children become republicans, dig Ted Nugent, love
barbeques, own guns, have big plasma tvs, etc, etc. You also get the reverse
with parents that are grooming their kids to be successful in business, or just
successful in general, only to discover that they have a free-spirited artist on
their hands that can't figure out what to do with her/his life. This isn't an
x-rated site, people either identify with this material or they don't. And if
it makes some people uncomfortable, well, I suppose it's feels very similar when
you realize that your kids didn't turn out the way you wanted them to.
