forest fire scarcity by autotelic No energy But prepared for higher bills this fall anyway The price of gas keeps rising And the drivers on the forecourt shake their heads at each other In pointed non verbal communication No one has to say a word . Lovelock says sustainable development is bulshit amyway That we cant afford any more development That we need to learn to nobly retreat I figure this applies on the personal level too I also know I need new running shoes And a new bike lock. The guy with the clipped beard in Birkenstocks who looks like he's a college professor Has parked his BMW across both pumps blocking us off He smiles aimiably as we wait for him to realise the predicament he's left us in He's all teeth And he just looks back at us with that stupid smug grin. I resist shouting at him but only just A couple at the adjacent pump row break the silence to chat to him Pleasantly passing the time of day We shake our heads and wait The people in this gas station drive me nuts They meander They wander round indecisively Leaving their cars and repeatedly doubling back for things They have no sense of urgency Can you remember which car and wife you are with honey? The bored housewives pull in for gas and to strut their stuff before picking up their red haired kids They touch their hair and look accusingly at the truckdrivers talking outside the store The station is out on the beltway In the middle of no problemsville Later back in the city at another gas station A woman walks in out of the sweltering heat wearing a heavy navy trenchcoat and snow boots And we're not talking Ugg here But thermal Alpine snow boots in mid July She wanders around the convenience store section filling her basket like its Walmart She's obvious not watching the weather channel or prices She's experienced a different type of crunch I watch her fill the basket with packets of cornflakes Its like she's shopping for an End Times gathering But the markup at this joint has to be, like, way over 200% Its a rip off the gas prices are bad enough But she just goes on putting stuff into her baskets anyway I look at the Asian checkout guy ' Big Moon' he says Grinning through lupine teeth The guy has crossed continents to work for his cousin for next to nothing But he's happy The New Moon bodes well for him But the mystery shopper has seen too many of them for her age She's lined and talking to herself but no-one gives a fuck Its survival of the fittest She pays for the shopping with dirty hands In cash And then walks out carrying the bags Across the forecourt and up the street She has no car I guess she must be sweating in that coat But she doesnt seem to be worried about gas prices And that's got to be something!
