waking dragon flexes green muscles

China has been labelled the worlds worst polluter and the current concerns over air quality for the opening of the Beijing Olympics just hint at the scale of the problem China faces but a new report published today identifies China as the leading renewable energy producer and states the waking dragon is overtaking  more developed industrialised economies in exploiting valuable economic opportunities, creating green-collar jobs and leading development of critical low carbon technologies.

The report  "China's Clean Revolution," by independent international advisory organisation the Climate Group shows that China's transition to a low carbon economy is rapidly happening , driven by supportive government policies which are not only spurring  innovation in low carbon technologies but also diverting billions of dollars of investment into energy efficiency and renewable energy.

The report serves as a warning to western Governments content to wax lyrical on tackling climate change and environment damage without actually doing anything concrete to deal with them.

Yesterday the UK was slammed in another report for claiming it had reduced carbon emissions when emissions had in fact risen in parallel with economic growth. Now China is demonstrating that there is a harsh economic price to be paid for dithering as China is already the  world leader in the manufacturing of solar photovoltaic technology (Solar PV) and rechargeable batteries and electrically driven vehicles and over the next 12 months, it is also set to become the world's leading exporter of wind turbines and to compete aggressively in other low carbon markets including solar water heaters, energy efficient home appliances.

Steve Howard, CEO of the Climate Group which has its base in Britain, the United States, Australia, China and India, said: "The reality is that China's government is beginning to unleash a low carbon dragon which will power its future growth, development and energy security objectives."

The price to indecisive and slow to adapt  western economies is markets and jobs.

Overall the rapid development of China and other developing countries can only  put more pressure on the environment and resources but the west could and should have done more sooner to tackle climate change and  economic decline and poverty.
