Human beings have a great need to believe in progress and up until the credit crunch and food crisis kicked in recently it must have been very easy not to mention reassuring to see this age as one of relentless progress and growth. As economists liken the current state of the global economy to the great depression of the 1930's some people still cling to their blind faith in progress but economic instability rarely occurs without dangerous political instability and the sudden escalation of conflict in the disputed breakaway South Osettia region in Georgia is a case in point. Two days ago one superpower was calling for a global truce to mark its hosting of the Olympics , yesterday the tanks and forces of another , the Russian Federation, rolled into South Osettia and its war planes struck deep into pro-western Georgia sparking a potential international crisis at a time when the US , already struggling to maintain its top dog position as a superpower , is stretched to breaking point defending its own strategic interests . With global markets in chaos and China and India awakening there is going to be a lot of jockeying for power , the rise of the rest is going to have a lot of unforseen consequences , there is no good reason to expect progress to be one of them.
