together but alone........in fear.

But hey, Obama took the time to reach
out to the rural poor in Iowa!

Now that's conscious!

Obama definitely has the face of a mystic, perhaps he's even an empath.
desik   |2008-10-29 17:04:41
maybe Simone , he does have that thing going on in the eyes ...and Mildred i'd
love to see that line as a new national reconstruction campaigning slogan
"Together but alone........in fear." Actually it could sum up the
thoughts of Team McCain...who really knows or cares.
Thatch   |2008-10-29 14:37:31
well gordon brown is dressed up as superman in the latest edition of the
economist....so sainthood for obama doesn't seem that preposterous.
southern man   |2008-10-29 19:52:35
...maybe he'll settle for minor deity....

obama deserves to win, he is absolutely what we need now in this country, a
leader with an authentic social conscience
bjorn   |2008-10-30 08:26:48
I dont doubt for one moment that Barack Obama is the most able Presidential
candidate or that he'll win what spooks me is the popular delusion and madness
of crowds thing deep at work here that invests Obama with near messianic
qualities .
PalmSpringsVet   |2008-10-30 10:50:13
I'm 72 this January , I've fought in two wars for my country , worked for the
same company from leaving the army to retirement , raised 4 beautiful kids,
have 9 grandchildren and I buried my beloved wife of 45 years last fall . I'm
not proud of it but I've also drunk, smoked and - Lord help me - whored my way
through life as much as the next guy but I have never ever read as much bulshit
as I've found on this site. I am passionate about life every fucking last breath
so Sir, rather than posting links to your filth on Flickr , a decent public
site frequented by impressionable teenagers , keep your dim , dumb uninformed
views of life, politics , God Almighty and the hereafter to yourself . This is
my first and last contribution to this meaningless debate.
autotelic   |2008-10-30 13:05:18
flickr has deemed my material safe, so far they haven't seen a reason to
put a black filter screen over any of my photos.......so you'll
probably have to take your discomfort and disdain to flickr.

They
have been known to change a page from safe to unsafe if enough puritanical
thought police hassle them about content.

"A person stops living the moment they stop talking about and
documenting what's really happening and what really
matters."

(a bumper sticker I saw yesterday)

Chaz   |2008-10-30 18:24:37
Wondered when the issue of censorship was going to raise its ugly head on here.
Maybe the vet is a disgruntled McCain supporter looking to project for his
candidates failure to make a credible case. The Economist has a hilarious
gunslinger cartoon of McCain staring down a well armed Obama with broken
pistols and pointing menancingly and calling out ' Its not too late for you to
concede...."
PaulaQ  - Change ! Change ! Change!   |2008-10-30 20:04:11
Barack Obama is going to have a lot going on on his watch just with the
fallout from the Credit Crunch and the task of having to urgently evolve and
implement strategies for avoiding an even more catastrophic Eco-Crunch
suprising us down the line.

Obama is without doubt the right man for the
job and it would be good to see a more consensual and fairer politics develop
to help the country cope with the complex and challenging circumstances we find
ourselves in but Obama is going to come under incredible pressure to bend his
policies to accomodate powerful vested interests as he strives to keep his
promises to address the basic needs of ordinary workers and less powerful
groups within society.

In terms of managing Change , in particular ,
infrastructural, Obama is certainly the guy best suited to the task but I
suspect much of the 'revolutionary change' the country will be subjected to
over the next few years will be change imposed by external/global events . This
could mean President Obama ends up spending a great deal more of time and money
managing damage limitation than most people hoping for urgent widesweeping
reforms would like. Most certainly he needs to help establish a model for
managing the US in a more sustainable way. There needs to be continuity. There
has to be a new way of managing how we live, consume and do business or we are
doomed. That's a mighty challenge and it's been clear for some time that Senator
McCain and Govenor Palin simply are not up to it.

I'm sure that autotelic and the red flag brigade were sitting around shedding
inspired tears when Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen sang Allentown recently, on
behalf of The Obama movement, but me and my friends were laughing at what a
fuckin joke it was.......you liberals and your drama!
Anonymous  - The New Green Deal   |2008-10-31 05:16:33
I do wonder if we're going to start to live in a more regulated world, given the
eco crunch, maybe we'll work the sustainability thing long enough for the polar
ice caps to melt. Will America become overly conscious about the environment
after being so unconscious for so long? Will we become more isolationist in
order to re-build our own infrastructure?

I bet a car like mine won't even
be allowed on the road in 5 or ten years. (I drive an old SAA

Adaptability.......we sure got a big bad mess on our hands.

It reminds me
of Al Gore's speech at the democratic convention. 'Aquarius' was playing in the
background when he was introduced, it was great, but oh so staged!
sarah   |2008-10-31 05:28:00
The highlight of the democratic convention was when Al Gore took the stage with
Aquarius grooving in the background! I agree!
RonSax  - playing texas holdem against the universe   |2008-10-31 11:13:58
Missed out on the Gore Aquarius gig but he has really helped raise consciousness
of environmental issues and that consciousness does need to become the norm and
I truly believe Barack Obama is going to do all he can to make that happen and
take the first steps to offer the country - and by implication the world - a New
Green Deal .

The 'isolationist' concern is also legitimate though as many
countries - the UK, Germany and Japan amongst them - also plan to massively
spend on infrastructure projects and to prop up certain sectors, i.e.
automotive and green tech to offset the effects of global recession but as
long as the 'unending growth model' is pursued there is a serious risk that
this will simply encourage greater competition rather than the international
cooperation required to co-ordinate and achieve anything like the optimum level
of sustainable global economic activity.

Here's the problem at its most
basic imagine seasoned and hardened Vegas Poker pros suddenly being told,
"Hey the objective is no longer eliminating rivals, winning and aquiring as
many chips as possible, the object now is to simply sustain the game , and
convince all the other players to do likewise, for as long as possible as an end
in itself before nature stops bankrolling the action and calls time on the
game.
St Bernard   |2008-10-31 12:45:15
I cast my vote for Obama.
I hope my vote gets counted.
I hope it makes a
difference.
While the world economy headed downhill,
Exxon made record third
quarter profits.
Will hope and change ever evolve into
a meaningful existence
that isn't
brutally unfair?
Chaz   |2008-10-31 13:37:59
"Will hope and change ever evolve into a meaningful existence that isn't
brutally unfair? "

Good question , I'm really not sure but I'd like to
believe it will within my lifetime.
vinny   |2008-10-31 13:43:05
The whole democratic convention was inspired from start to finish.

The
republican convention was pretty lame in comparison. I do remember that Rudy
Giuliani said some pretty funny things, just because he's such an audacious
cocky New Yorker. He has a certain biting wit, always thought he would do ok if
he tried his hand at stand up comedy.

I also remember the camera panning to
George Will. He wasn't looking so confident or inspired. He had this look on
his face like, "this is nothing compared to the democratic convention, I'm
very uncomfortable, because I can sense that my team isn't going to win."
BenOrlando   |2008-10-31 14:03:49
John McCain is going to be the next President of the United States because the
majority will not tolerate having the country ruled by a racist and communist
minority. I'll leave the country if Obama wins .

The Maverick and The Visionary

The Visionary is The Real Maverick

And The
Maverick isn't that visionary
Anonymous  - continuation   |2008-10-31 15:07:28
....in other words: John McCain's campaign isn't very contemporary, it's got to
be awkward and embarrassing for him and his supporters
Tony   |2008-10-31 16:21:58
The US Presidency has slipped out of John McCain's grasp into the future.
McCain is a man after his time, perhaps a very honest and honourable man who
knows but this election has to be about looking and planning ahead for the good
of all not projecting backwards.
