the past isn't cast in stone

and history isn't just a row of heads

we carve it out for ourselves

believing - for some reason

that its more stable than now or the future

what happened happened

its fixed

for all time

right?

but its also so much fiction

chiselled on to loosely grasped details

sedimentary facts

worn away at by time and tears

into complex canyon lands

nor are peoples features that different

and now that the scientists claim we can clone the dead

perhaps we'll be able bring our Neanderthal cousins back

if I've learned one things in life

its this

it's about the human  family

Greetings! My name is Becky and I'm one of the founding members of The New
Colonialists, an outreach micromanaging system of benevolence, finally, talented
liberals all across the nation have a chance to assist misunderstood noble
savages and overworked blue collar workers, we'll show you how to stretch your
dollar, benefit from rationing, teach you about the beauty of grey water
plumbing, and get you hooked up to fair trade only food.

We need you as much
as you need us.
Thatch   |2008-11-07 00:42:56
Hey Becky, some of us are much more concerned about out second amendment
rights, where I live gun sales went through the roof over the last
2 days.

So you don't need to be my France, and I won't be your Algiers!
vinny   |2008-11-07 01:27:55
gun sales are up where I live too, the amount of paranoia coming from the right
feels pretty intense, I hope they all just settle down soon. Thatch: THE USA
WON'T COLONIALIZE THE USA.

Get a grip, the left wing agenda is pretty benign
(even if mandatory rationing sees the light of day)

The planet is
overpopulated and we're running out of food, and I'm all for seeing this issue
dealt with directly.
zorro   |2008-11-07 06:05:37
America has a mature and stable democracy well able to withstand the
guilty consciences of  patronising salaried white liberals (
although personally i'll find their 'we're all for the working classes
but dont want to live anywhere near them ' crap nauseating ) and the
rantings of many vocal bruised conservatives out there on the edge who
are desperately struggling , with the help of Hannity , Limbaugh et al ,
to percieve and portray Obama's victory as a 9/11 event or
the fulfillnent of doomsday prophecy posting stuff on the net like
this:

the military is 80% Republican. Obama better not mess up like we think
he will, the military will turn on him.
jillian  - service   |2008-11-07 06:07:17
I bet lots of people are now feeling motivated about getting work in the public
sector, and that's a good thing.
Vinny   |2008-11-07 06:16:16
I wonder if Russia would have let out a distant growl if McCain had won?
sarah   |2008-11-07 06:31:47
I'm starting to get confused about where you guys really stand on issues. Why
have you allowed people that sound like right wing talk show hosts come over
here and piss on your territory?
Haven't you noticed that some really offensive
things are being said about members of your own party?
Anonymous   |2008-11-07 06:40:27
Talking of New Colonialism, I wonder if Obama is going to continue to base
foreign policy on the White Man's Burden? The Neo Cons are going to be pretty
pissed if he doesnt.
Matt Koch, Redwood City   |2008-11-07 12:24:34
Becky

The New Colonialists ...wow it's great that you're organizationally
driving the Change agenda already. I was looking for an opportunity like
this...is there a Stanford branch? as I've identified the need for a website to
help facilitate recycling food shoppers cant afford to buy in local marts , or
maybe just end date expired stuff , towards the street homeless around Palo
Alto. No meat products or processed foods though and feeding times should be a
communal experience.

Anyway , I'm seeking help with fast tracking Government
funding to pilot the scheme first and partner with other well placed agencies to
replace the patchy voluntary provision offered by the local Catholic church with
a modern professionally online managed 5 day a week service.

I guess I am
envisioning a starting salary of around 45K .Before you ask No habla Espanol ,
maybe we can encourage service users to volunteer to take care of that side of
things and call it work experience .
bebo  - there's a train coming...   |2008-11-07 12:20:27
They told us the train was coming, they didnt mention it was the gravy train
express from Nob Hill! Ordinary working people who voted Obama need to really
fucking watch the chattering classes as much as the disgruntled Right if they
want this Change Revolution to stay on track.
autotelic   |2008-11-07 15:22:03
Sarah, just the other day you left a post disparaging of the "token"
dumpster diving middle class hippies that you went to college with. Are you
saying that it's ok if the left makes fun of the left, but that the right has no
business coming here with their observations?

The threat of regulation
can't trickle down to this website.

And by the sounds of it you don't want
this to become a bourgeois revolution either, and if it does, that will be far
worse than people bitching and moaning about their second amendment
rights.

Along with Liberal guilt comes political correctness. I sure as hell
don't want to work for an agency called The New Colonialists!
jillian  - class war consciousness and the threat of the bour   |2008-11-07 15:32:27
ever notice there are far more bourgeois people on the left than on the
right?
otto  - dont let history repeat itself   |2008-11-07 16:08:22
Its a sad fact of life that those who claim to represent will betray the
'represented' sooner or later , we dont need to read Animal Farm to figure this
out, so you guys are completely justified in fearing the Change revolution
being hijacked - as most revolutions are - by self-serving bourgeois
functionaries towards maintaining /re-establishing some middle class status quo
and equally right to raise this problem right NOW
at this all important
time.

There's a real need here for greater class consciousness
including a grasp of the concept of perpetual revolution.

I am
alarmed but not suprised that the debate has so rapidly switched to Mrs
Obama's dress, designer cabinet members and what kind of puppy Obama is going to
buy his kids as already there is talk of Democrats trying to dampen down public
expectations of Change. Thank you for voting for us folks now please move
along, there is nothing more to see.
frank  - anticipating ( petite ) bourgeois revolt   |2008-11-07 16:02:40
The Right never make any bones about their Class interests and loyalties its the
ambiguity of the coffee table revolutionaries and labour aristocracy on the
Left one has to watch out for as most social revolutions do not fall prey to
hostile external forces they are weakened and diluted from within.

autotelic   |2008-11-07 16:16:22
I agree completely with the 2 comments above, we're not going to let this sleep
though, we don't understand liberal guilt, we've never been privledged enough to
do so. I agree with Frank and I agree with Otto. There's something very
duplicitous about a lot of left wing do-gooders, especially when they don't have
any roots in poverty.

This website is pretty consistent, we're class
consciousness enthusiasts, and our own party needs to be examined and
deconstructed.

Ordinary proletarian people don't go out and serve others
because of guilt!
frank   |2008-11-07 16:51:24
With the economy in freefall and bleeding jobs it   remains to be seen
whether the Government will be  as keen on nationalising collapsing industries to protect blue collar jobs
as it was to use public money to bail out the white collar banking
and finance rackets.

I imagine Dorothy Day would have simply said
that the origin of MC guilt was this compassionless and destructive Class
bias , I'm also pretty sure she viewed it as sinful.
Vinny   |2008-11-07 16:53:58
let me guess, you've lost a lot of sensitive, touchy, guilty friends along the
way?

Frank and Otto have just given us the missing pieces of a nation
restored.

Can't wait to see the pictures of how the coffee table
revolutionaries plan on taking control. They'll do it with an incredible amount
of progressive style and finesse no doubt.
otto   |2008-11-07 16:58:45
It will be invite only Vinny .
TimFlickr   |2008-11-07 17:05:40
I'm sorry to pis on your parade guys but the Mt Rushmoor pic is lame.
Revolutionary times require revolutionary art and imagery.
SheilaB  - Schenectady Calling   |2008-11-07 19:16:10
Spot on Frank! But the Class system is designed to be self exonerating ,
self-rewarding even as it motivates the priviledged individual to propel
themselves forward through society on the basis of Class and cultural capital -
indeed legitimises it - and then assuage any guilt felt for fucking others over
by doing penance in the most self-serving and profitable way . The social good
they do also usually reproduces and perpetuates the orginal class tensions ,
iequality and division of the ' sin' yet provides the priviledged 'do gooder'
with a humanity and blessed sense of 'marketable' self worth and esteem denied
to the ' given to'.

If you've ever stayed in a local authority run night
shelter or stood in a soup queue you'll know exactly what i mean, the poor are
negated at the point of relief through lack of any real compassion , brotherly
love or empathy.

I now work in a lunatic asylum and God knows I have seen
how the priviledged live off and lack the most basic compassion for the poor.I
think the unfairness of this world and knowing , jesus , absolutely fucking
knowing that there isnt any sanctuary is driving me insane !
