The vatican has finally forgiven John Lennon for his ' We're more famous than Jesus ' quip -what hope for heretics now? .

I was thinking of starting a new series of 'modern heretics and martyrs' posts
but if the church is now going to forgive heretics a few decades after mass book
or in Lennon's case record burnings there doesnt seem to be much point. Even
fatwas seem to have a short shelf life nowadays as evidenced by the gradual
rehabilitation of Satanic Verses author Salman Rushdie.

There is something
in the human psyche that demands a good old fashioned auto de fe , the ritual
denouncing and obliteration of ' otherness'
that we clamour for on our hind
legs to reassure ourselves that we deserve eternal life.
