The economy and environment are linked dynamic systems but since the industrial
revolution the sheer volume of human activity has rapidly become a predominant
force over the Earth's environment to the extent that some environmental experts
now want to use the term anthropocene to define this new, unique and destructive
' man made ' geological period .

Yesterday Barack Obama chose a Climate
Specialist to head his Whitehouse Environmental effort but rather than this
being a great reassurance the message of sustainable growth achieved through
the application of cutting edge science still rings hollow and comes across as
concerted human efforts to combat violence and war do in Beckers work, our
efforts start of highminded and sincere but very quickly become
counterproductive and equally if not more destructive.

As the Dalai Lama
puts it:

"The advancement of science and technology seems to have
achieved little more than linear, numerical improvement; development often means
little more than more mansions in more cities. As a result, the ecological
balance- the very basis of our life on earth- has been greatly
affected."

It feels like its just another immortality project we're
expected to culturally buy into, to stand back and wave and cheer as science
comes thundering to the rescue to save an overheated planet and its wriggling
ant like masses.

I agree, and what a promising start to the New Year on the Human Rights front
with the US - including by his silence Obama - giving the Israelis a green light
to do to Gaza what the Serbs did to Sarajevo.

Disgusting.
