Luckily, I was never attached to The American Dream; I never believed in it, was never even interested in it.  I don’t possess the kind of social skills that are required to partake in it.  Someone recently told me that many Americans are going to have to start dreaming alternative dreams; the masses might have to grapple with the void, and learn how to dance the existential dance, because the answers that many people are looking for can’t be found in the economy.  Hello!  There’s a recession going on.  And the reason why this is so alarming is because the whole idea of community has virtually disappeared from our landscape.  I’ve always been alone with nowhere to turn, but for those who always thought that life offered buffers are in for a very rude awakening.  Every debt collector out there will tell you that many people are paying for gas and food with their credit cards, and paying their credit card bills before they pay their mortgages.  Yes, it’s fatalistic, people know that the house will vanish, but they still need to eat.   Is now the perfect time to “collectively” acknowledge that the big ship is sinking?  The alienation that I have struggled with my entire life is now a mainstream phenomenon, and those that have never had to experience life as a self-contained unit, with nowhere to turn, are living with a type of hopelessness that I’ve been quite intimate with all along.  I am curious as to what the church has been telling its flock as of late, cause if  it’s not offering food and shelter, it can’t be saying anything that’s of much use.

Is there any real reward for showing this kind of vulnerability? Look, I like
your website, I'm starting to realize that you guys really do have a sense of
humor. I admit, I'm one of those guys that comes from a bourgeoise background,
but I can laugh about it. Let me give you a little tip about the bourgeoisie:
we will always give the impression that everything is ok, even if we have been
shamed in our own community, whether it's through financial loss, marital
problems, or not exceeding standards, we just bullshit our way through
life......which means that we don't have to openly talk about how insignificant
we really feel. Yeah, these are fucking scary times, but I'm anonymous here, so
I can't lose anything by admitting such, but I would never dare talk about this
with anyone that I deal with in the 3D.

Dont act up is such a bourgeois line
the truth is, life isnt dramatic enough
for the bourgeoisie
they have to ham it up
to accentuate the triumph of the
mundane
like the bank clerk who loses his job yet still kisses his wife and kids
goodbye and commutes into town with his briefcase every morning to create the
impression that he still has a job to go to

as long as the impression lasts
everyone is happy his wife loves the idea that there's no limit on her
credit

his kids do better at school for the lie

even when his deception is
found out his fellow commuters pay the man a compliment
' at least he pretended
to work' they'll say

its the spirit that keeps the protestant work ethic
alive

if only he hadnt snapped and took out the wife and kids with a putting
iron...

taken out for their own good of course

like who'd want to live with
routine failure?

no! you wont find the bourgeoisie watching day time tv in
their soup stained vests
they dress to get up in the morning
for them, life is
an appointment to be kept and creating impressions is all

they are all
graduates of the theatre pathetique

poking fun at the bourgeoisie is one thing, but rampant poverty is no laughing
matter.
Was this guy drinking a martini in his secure abode when he wrote
this?
Life is good!
DOS  - and the point is   |2008-04-08 04:26:58
I don't struggle economically, but I promise you this---my life's a fucking
mess.
zola  - the eternal ritual   |2008-04-08 04:55:01
i suppose the idea of god is very bourgeois, the eternal watcher checking for
every faux pas and violation of good taste

the good bourgeois wont make an
exit without first straightening his tie and making sure all the bills are paid,
he'll also command sympathy in his plight, in coffee shop circles, recession
threatened stockbrokers are always going to seem more deserving of help than
coal miners facing a pit closure

frank   |2008-04-08 05:12:49
murder is more acceptable than suicide to the bourgeoisie , they'll happilly
identify with wife murderers and poisoners but put great distance between
themselves and anyone remotely depressed by the burden of life
anna   |2008-04-08 05:17:39
i'd personally like to extend a warm welcome to any members of the bourgeoisie
reading these comments
DOS  - Let's establish something here   |2008-04-08 05:34:57
you can't intimidate me, and that's why I'm not uncomfortable with anything you
say. It's no different than if I call you guys a bunch of social deviants that
are probably never going to amount to much in the world's eyes. You would just
laugh if I said that. I guess the real reason why I felt compelled to comment
here is because I get the impression that you guys think that people with status
and money are somehow exempt from the human condition, and I'm telling you, it's
not true. It's hopeless for all of us.
D   |2008-04-08 05:38:45
I think my life mirrors yours DOS though i'll admit to having money problems as
well
redstarfist   |2008-04-08 05:44:15
so tell me DOS, what's sex like for members of the bourgeoisie class?
DOS   |2008-04-08 05:47:47
I never met a prostitute that I didn't like....just don't ask me about my
marriage.
Anonymous  - just for the record   |2008-04-08 05:52:34
i fucked lars von trier, but what does that have to do with the dismal science?
Let's not digress people.
anna   |2008-04-08 07:19:43
to me, the real divider is that the bourgeois are alienated from themselves and
we are alienated from life - two very different ways of ' being' that are also
pretty antagonistic .

i'd say the bourgeois types probably have more capacity
to be hurt in life
Jillian   |2008-04-08 07:43:08
the bourgeois always have so much more to lose when they finally do face-off
with themselves, good point Anna.
anna   |2008-04-08 12:31:30
dont get me wrong, i also think the bourgeois make the most spectacular suicides
as they murder themselves to enact revenge on society
sy  - its all in the cards   |2008-04-08 13:36:06
poverty is a good fucking leveller but the bourgeois seem pretty adept at
jumping the queue, even at the homeless shelter.

they can almost bank on
people perceiving them to have fallen further and on harder times than their
working class counterparts and by God they usually do. they'll very subtly
identify themselves for special attention , sympathy and getting ahead by using
some learned latin phrase around the good sisters of mercy or name dropping
Dosteoevsky with the caring rich bitch ladelling out the soup

they
effectively have a get out of jail quick card for life

you cant blame people
for using the cards life deals them i suppose. it just seems cruel if you are in
the marginalised camp but its effectively our lot to silently freefall through
life and just absorb the impact of hitting the ground. its just how things are.
there essentially is no equality
Devon  - whiners-socialdeviants and victims   |2008-04-08 14:07:17
you guys talk about the impressions that the bourgeoise have mastered, DOS is
the first to point this out, maybe he's starting to become disillusioned, so
he's getting honest with himself. But how honest have you been with yourselves?
Haven't you given the impression that you can handle going through life with
the shape of the L your forehead? It's pretty obvious that the reason why some
of you struggle with depression and hopelessness is because you don't fit in,
you're invalidated and unappreciated by the world at large, yeah I realize that
you're used to being marginalized and left out, but please don't tell me that
you can handle it, or that you don't care, yes, the bourgeoise need to learn how
to adapt to themselves in all of its awful nakedness, but you guys better start
to find a way to adapt to the world around, cause the world will never adapt to
you. Should we talk about Darwinism and which members will get left behind?
anna  - whiners-socialdeviants and victims, etc   |2008-04-08 14:26:32
the truth is we are all a little bit bourgeois nowadays - we all whine and dine
DOS   |2008-04-08 19:12:05
it's ironic that I feel more comfortable interacting with people that come from
faulty genetic stock, then with members of my own refined community, and it
doesn't help matters that you guys actually have a conscience!
I actually
disagree with the fool that said you should learn how to roll with the punches
better....go out kicking instead.
M16 Vet   |2008-04-08 19:43:26
The miltary helped me overcome my immature fears and anxieties and you never
hear much talk of moral fibre today, we have just created a culture of bleating
victimhood. You dont know what survival means.
anna   |2008-04-08 19:58:24
I know what economic survival means and there are more tests of human character
than being prepared to die for your country.

Try living with principles in
this culture , that's no walk in the park either.
anna   |2008-04-12 03:41:05
We do need a more collective /communal approach to resolving many of the
challenging economic, social and environmental problems we face today , on the
other hand, I am not so optimistic about the boundaries blurring ref. social
stratification ( call it class or whatever you will ) as we are not seeing a
process of general embourgeoisment, something we are often told is happening,
the culture is polarised with the gulf between rich and poor getting wider all
the time. I wish it were not so.
Sarah   |2008-04-08 23:00:18
tense atmosphere around here, it reminds me of something I've always known:
nothing is more controversial than the issue of class, and the reason why it's
so controversial is because it's morally bankrupt and inhumane, and it's often
very difficult for people from different classes to find common ground when they
mingle, it's always going to be a heated debate.
