There's an old saying that ' if they could, the Rich would Pay the Poor to Die for them ' only its slightly outdated as Saleemul Huq explains in his critique of Tony Blair's reincarnation as a Climate Change Envoy , as nowadays the Rich expect the Poor to Die for them for nothing.
Blair wandered into his new Climate Change envoy role without anyone really noticing or questioning his suitability for the job and while he is certainly well placed to get the attention of world leaders Huq questions why the Climate Change debate is being restricted to the level of the worst greenhouse gas emitters at the expense of poorer nations that are already feeling the impact of climate change - floods, drought, crop failure, disease and sea level rise.
These impacts will be felt most in the more than forty Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans; in the UN-recognised group of 50 Least Developed Countries (LDCs), mainly in Africa but also in Asia; and in a number of other highly vulnerable African nations.
These 100 countries have a combined population of nearly one billion people, but produce only 3.2% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Restricting the Climate Change debate to those principally responsible for causing it just adds insult to injury. Why should 1 billion of the poorest people on the planet be the only ones to pay for the droughts, famines, floods and other climate change disasters our selfish lifestyles have inflicted upon them? The Rich nations are keen to shift the costs of Climate Change on to the poor and vunerable and Mr Blair seems happy enough to go along with this.
