A survey carried out by the Indiana University School of Medicine has established that More than half of U.S. doctors now favor switching to a national health care plan and fewer than a third oppose the idea . Of the 2,000 doctors surveyed , 59 were in favour of legislation to create a national health insurance program while 32 opposed it.
This contrasts with a 2002 survey that found that 49 of U.S. physicians supported national health insurance and 40 were against it so the new survey reflects a considerable shift of opinion if its findings truly reflect the views of America's 800,000.
"Many claim to speak for physicians and represent their views. We asked doctors directly and found that, contrary to conventional wisdom, most doctors support national health insurance," said Dr. Aaron Carroll of the Indiana University School of Medicine, who led the study.
The U.S. has no single organised health care system instead it depends on a sketchy patchwork of insurance provided by federal and state government to the elderly, poor and disabled and some children.
Market forces do not seem to be the most effective way of distributing good health care as studies have shown that the U.S. pays substantially more for health care than other Western countries without achieving better results for patients and 49 milion Americans have no health care insurance at all.
The state of the U.S. health care system has become an election issue but to date no candidate or party has put forward a fully comprehensive national health care plan.
Most other industrialised countries have national health care plans and outside of the U.S countries which buck this trend are largely limited to Africa and underveloped parts of Asia and the Middle East. U.S. war funding pays for universal healthcare in Iraq and Afghanistan.
